When Would a Dentist Suggest Mini-Implants over Regular Implants?

Dental implants offer patients various benefits, and other tooth replacements can't replicate some of them. For example, a dental implant is the only tooth replacement that a dentist places in the patient's jaw, allowing it to meld with the jawbone to replace the tooth root. This unique benefit promotes bone health.

So when a patient finds out that traditional dental implants may not work for them, they understandably want a suitable alternative, which is where mini-implants come in.

Additionally, mini-implants may offer an ideal solution if a patient needs a dental implant but wants something more affordable than a traditional implant. Mini-implants often require less time at the dental office because the procedure to place a mini implant is not as complex. This also generally means a lower cost.

Who's a Good Candidate for Mini-Implants?

Patients who prize affordability and who want to undergo a more straightforward procedure than is required for a traditional implant can make excellent candidates for mini-implants.

Traditional implants require a decent amount of bone density, so dentists also recommend mini-implants to many patients who don't have the bone mass necessary to support a conventional implant. Due to the mini-implant's smaller size, it doesn't have the same bone density requirements, making it a more feasible option for patients with some bone loss.

The only other option for a patient who doesn't have the bone mass to support a standard implant would be a bone graft, which adds bone density to support a regular implant and adds to the cost of your dental work and the time spent healing.

In the end, mini implants provide a convenient and budget-friendly alternative to traditional implants for some patients, which is why we enjoy offering them. And patients who go the mini implant route can still enjoy many of the same benefits as the patients who pursue traditional implants.
