When should I schedule my child’s first dental visit?

girl during dental checkup in high point nc It’s critical for you to be proactive with your child’s oral health care. That is why we recommend that your child have their first dental visit when they are between one and three years of age.

This may seem early to you, and you may wonder what kind of problems could possibly develop when your child is just a baby. The fact is that your child’s first teeth play an important role in the proper development of their permanent teeth.

How Teeth Develop

You may not be aware of it, but even while you’re pregnant, your child’s second teeth are starting to develop in their jaw. Of course, you will not see them emerge until after your child’s baby teeth have gone through the process of erupting and falling out.

Even though the baby teeth will fall out, they actually hold a place for the permanent teeth developing in your child’s gums. If you don’t follow proper oral hygiene and monitor the health of these teeth, they may be lost to decay. When this happens, it creates a domino effect that can allow permanent teeth to erupt in the wrong position.
